Abstract
Transportation barriers prevent millions of Americans from accessing timely medical services. Non-emergency medical transportation (NEMT) provides critical support through rideshare and van services. However, NEMT utilization remains low due to logistical challenges, limited patient awareness of available services, and insufficient accommodations for patients with mobility needs. This narrative review synthesizes evidence on the effectiveness, barriers, and cost-effectiveness of NEMT programs to inform future policy decisions. The findings indicate that Enhanced Smart Transportation platforms may improve delivery and utilization of NEMT services. Addressing persistent gaps in transportation services is essential to improve access to clinical care and reduce disparities among vulnerable populations.
